Rebuilding instead of replacing

Rebuilding instead of replacing
Many industrial machines retain significant value in their mechanical structures long after production requirements have changed. By rebuilding and modernizing existing equipment instead of replacing it, UVA LIDKÖPING helps customers reduce material consumption, minimise waste and avoid the emissions associated with manufacturing new machines.
In a recent project, rebuilding an existing machine generated steel savings equivalent to 3802 kg of CO₂ emissions, demonstrating the value of extending equipment life.
Measurable results and long-term value
A customer was facing a familiar challenge: how to meet new production requirements with ageing equipment. The initial assumption was that a new machine would be required.
Following a technical evaluation, UVA LIDKÖPING concluded that the machine’s mechanical foundation remained in excellent condition and could continue operating for many years.
Instead of manufacturing a completely new machine, UVA LIDKÖPING rebuilt and modernised the existing equipment while preserving key structural components. By extending the life of the machine rather than replacing it, significant material value could be retained while still meeting today’s production requirements.
By retaining key structural components, the customer avoided the material consumption associated with a new machine and achieved steel savings equivalent to 3802 kg of CO₂ emissions. The rebuild extended the machine's service life while preserving the value already embedded in the equipment.

When rebuilding becomes a smarter alternative
The project supports UVA LIDKÖPING's focus on resource efficiency and product longevity. Many machines are rebuilt not just once, but two or more times during their operational life. While electronics and control systems are upgraded as technology evolves, the mechanical foundation often remains in service for decades. Each rebuild further reduces material consumption, emissions, and waste.
The case demonstrates how lifecycle thinking, technical expertise, and customer collaboration create long-term value.

Key takeaway
Machines built to last can continue creating value far beyond their original expected lifespan. By rebuilding rather than replacing, companies can preserve resources, reduce environmental impact, and maximize the value of existing assets across multiple generations of technology.
When we extend the life of a machine, we are not only preserving materials and reducing emissions. We are also building on decades of engineering knowledge and value that already exist.
"The most sustainable manufacturing solutions combine cutting-edge new machines with the continuous modernization of proven equipment, extending performance, capability, and value across multiple technology generations.”
