Transition to a PFAS-free fire suppression liquid
For several years, the environmental and health impacts of firefighting foams have been the subject of increasing regulatory and public attention. In particular, concerns have focused on the release of fluorinated surfactants and PFAS, which have been linked to contamination of drinking water sources and adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems, especially at firefighting training sites.
Although Fogmaker International's original suppression liquid contained only a very low concentration of PFAS, the company has developed Eco 1, a next-generation fire suppression liquid that is completely free from PFAS. This innovation enables Fogmaker International to meet evolving regulatory requirements while continuing to deliver reliable fire suppression performance and supporting the transition to PFAS-free fire suppression systems.
Navigating the transition to PFAS-free fire suppression
The new liquid, Eco 1, was first launched in the United States in 2022 in response to emerging PFAS restrictions, followed by its introduction to the Australian market in 2023. In Europe, market adoption accelerated in 2025 as production disruptions affecting PFAS-based liquids created significant supply challenges. These disruptions, caused by PFAS contamination at a key supplier's production site, required Fogmaker International to expedite the transition of customers to Eco 1.
The conversion process involves replacing the firefighting fluid, installing compatible nozzles, and completing updated risk assessments to comply with revised certification requirements. This transition has required substantial investment in customer and partner training, technical support, and service activities.
This experience demonstrates the importance of taking ownership of the transition. By acting early, Fogmaker International has been able to support customers in transitioning to a PFAS-free fire suppression solution while maintaining operational reliability and meeting evolving regulatory requirements.
The product has been independently verified as 100% PFAS-free through the GreenScreen Certified® Firefighting Foam Standard.

Turning regulatory change into opportunity
The primary challenge was managing the transition from a PFAS-based firefighting liquid to the PFAS-free alternative, Eco 1, while balancing customer expectations with regulatory uncertainty. Many OEM customers preferred to delay the conversion until PFAS legislation came into force, creating uncertainty around the timing of implementation.
An unforeseen challenge emerged when suppliers of PFAS-based chemicals discontinued production earlier than expected due to environmental contamination at their manufacturing facilities. The resulting supply shortages significantly accelerated the need for customers to transition to the new solution.
Fogmaker International has set a target for 100% of fire suppression systems produced to use PFAS-free fire suppression liquid by December 2026. Progress is monitored monthly, and current trends indicate that the company is on track to achieve the target.
Developing products with reduced environmental impact is a core objective for Fogmaker International.
The transition to PFAS-free fire suppression liquid is a top strategic priority and a critical step towards reducing environmental impact and reducing the use of PFAS-based substances in our fire suppression systems.

Key takeaway
The transition to PFAS-free fire suppression liquid highlights the importance of proactive leadership in managing regulatory change. Rather than waiting for legislation to dictate the pace of change, companies that define a clear strategy and execute it early are better positioned to reduce risk, strengthen supply chain resilience, and support customers through a structured transition. This experience demonstrates that taking ownership of the transition not only improves operational planning but also helps customers transition to a PFAS-free fire suppression solution.
“We take pride in being an innovator that that supports customers in transitioning to PFAS-free fire suppression systems, for the global market, not only in terms of its contents but also in the efficiency and durability of our systems compared to other solutions on the market.”
